A selected sketch model was selected and then manipulated at various scales with people and human dimension added. The model I selected was based on symmetry and ugliness, with the ugliness represented by a jagged hole bursting through the symmetry. Four of the photos were then composed on an A1 sheet with the title relating to 'dynamic composition'. A photograph of the composition entitled 'burst' is attached. The photos at different sizes are arranged to leave a jagged hole in the centre and black spaces bursting outside the frame.

Another task was to quickly produce eight thumbnail sketches in different media.

These had to be perspective sketches at eye level incorporating people. The attched sketches were done in:

1. Sharpie felt tip
2. Pencil
3. Coloured pencil
4. Ball point
5. Watercolour pencil
6. Chattahoochee silicon pencil
7. Triplus fine liner
8. Triplus colour felt tips

Task 2 was to quickly create a series of sketch models out of paper and tape according to various criteria. This tracing is of a photo of a model built according to the criteria Symmetry and ugliness. The model had to only touch the ground on edges. The model has symmetry on two perpendiculer axes. The ugliness is represented by a bullet or shell hole tearing through the centre of the model. The model has contact with the ground on the four points of its legs.

Master planning exercise 1

This is one of the first exercises we have done. We rapidly surveyed a small courtyard near the Mezannine studios, then had to reproduce an annotated plan without reference to our notes. Using the Plan, we then were given an hour to work on some sketches of a design for the place and then produce four annotated perspectives. One of three themes could be chosen, Refuge;Fluidity and Layers.

I chose Refuge, as it seemed a good idea to use the courtyard space as a place of repose, relaxation and refuge from the rigours of the Architectural school exercises...

As a square space with lots of square windows and brickwork, my plan was based on interlocking squares of pergolas, arbours with seats, centered on a central canopied area. This canopied area would contain a restful pool and fountain, centered around a statue of winged Mercury whose statue is on top of the old Mansion building. He has flown down and found refuge in the pool.

The canopy is echoed by triangular canopies over the landing at the top of the stairs and flowing further downwards over other seating. The white colouring echoes the windows and is picked up by massive faux classical collumns providing a sense of solidity and security, a refuge from the flimsy plastic modern world. These columns support green roofs and walls and are decorated with the three classical architectural orders, referencing the school of architecture. Planting is simple and mainly evergreen, to provide year round colour, shape and texture and suits the shady site. This includes ivy, box and juniper.
